Tarot 101 : Learn The Basics of Tarot and Get Started Right Now

What is Tarot?

Tarot is a powerful tool for gaining insight into your intuition and has been the foundation of exercising my psychic abilities. Building a deeper relationship with my thoughts through using tarot has been deeply healing for myself and many of my clients. Over the past centuries the cards have gained a mysterious and sometimes “evil” reputation as a tool of the occult. Today in the 2020’s the cards are gaining mainstream popularity as many around the globe awaken to the realities of personal empowerment through finding spirituality within themselves.

Tarot’s history as a divining tool can be traced back to the early 17th century. It was most popularly circulated as a deck designed by A.E. Waite in 1909. It began as a parlor game with suits of cards designed to explore major life themes common to humankind. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to have psychic abilities to read cards, nor do they necessarily “tell your future”. You do not need to be psychic to read cards, but a reader with experience, wisdom and honed intuition can guide you in drawing deeper truths about yourself and the potential choices that lie before you.

Tarot & Oracle Decks

A standard tarot deck is 78 cards made of cards called The Major Arcana and The Minor Arcana. They are further divided into 4 suits of cards similar to a standard deck of cards. There are many variations that expand on the standard deck, with interpretations and themes attributed to all types of artists.

The Major Arcana are numbered picture cards that explore overarching themes and transitions in your life. They deal with the “big energy” and longterm events encompassed within 22 phases of the journey through life. (Joseph Campbell, “The Hero with A Thousand Faces”) The suits of the Minor Arcana are separated into Wands (Fire) , Cups (Water) , Swords (Air) and Pentacles (Earth). Minor Arcana explores the minutia of everyday life. Cards can present themselves upside-down or “reversed”. Generally this indicates an energy blockage in this area of your life.

Oracle cards can be used in addition to or instead of standard cards to dive further into themes. These cards don’t have any specific rules and can involve positive affirmations, spiritual archetypes, messages from angels or goddesses, famous literary witches and the list goes on…

What is a Reading Like?

The person reading the cards begins by shuffling and reflecting on their intentions for the reading. Some consider this a creation of energy exchange between the deck and the reader. Some readers shuffle until the desired amount of cards fall out of the deck. Others prefer to spread the cards out and choose the ones they feel called to. The cards are then laid out in a pattern called a “spread” and then interpreted based on their orientation.

Kinds of Tarot Readings

There are two types of tarot readings, open or structured. In an open reading, a general energy read is done for the day or a situation in question. This type of reading can be done more quickly and topically and is often a good exercise for a connection with your intuition through a short reading or beginning your day with your journal.

In a structured reading the cards are intentionally placed to tell a story. A popular basic spread consists of three cards which can be interpreted in seemingly endless ways such as Mind-Body-Spirit, Past-Present-Future, Situation-Action-Outcome and so on. More complex spreads such as the Celtic Cross cover 10+ cards and dive deeply into a situation for a multi-level look at the path that lies ahead.

How Can I Apply This To My Life?

It takes a lot of practice to accurately read cards since it combines a knowledge of their themes and a deep dive into parts of yourself you may be unaccustomed to looking at. It’s important you remember not to take readings literally or as serious bad omens, as this can create negative self-fulfilling prophecies. The key to using tarot as a tool for positive transformation is to remember that you are looking into the current state and future possibilities of your own inner thoughts and only you have the ability to impact how you change your thoughts and actions to meet your future.
